Conflict = What is Wanted: Odysseus wants to go home, and in this book he must give away his identity/tell his story to the Phaiakians.
Parts of his tale:
Part 1- Kalypso
He was held captive by Kalypso, and says he was being used to her heart's delight
Part 2- the island of the Kikonians
Odysseus and his crew went to an island where they kill everyone, takes belongings, and enslave the women.
Part 3- The Lotus Eaters
Ten days later, they land on the island of the Lotus Eaters. Three of Odysseus’ men eat the lotus flower, lose their memory of home, and want to stay on the island forever. So, Odysseus quickly gathers his men, including the three lotus-eating ones, and leaves the island.
Part 4- Polyphemos
They enter the island of Polyphemos(the cyclopes). At first they enter his cave, and eat some of his animals. They try to be hospitable at first, and meet the cyclopes the easy/safe way. Upon the cyclopes' return to his cave, he becomes angry at the impostors and eats some men. Odysseus and his remaining men get Polyphemos drunk, when he passes out they stab him in the eye. While Polyphemos was yelling because of the pain, his other cyclopes buddies ask if anything is wrong. His reply is "nohbody tricked me". Odysseus said his name was "Nohbody" as a trick. The next morning Odysseus and his men hid under the sheep(under their wool) and when the cyclopes opened his cave to let his sheep out, he also let out the men hiding. Upon sailing away from the island, Odysseus cannot help but taunt the cyclopes. Polyphemos throws boulders, almost sinking their ship, then prays to Poseidon to curse Odysseus, which happens successfully
Book 13 Setting: Island of the PhaiakiansCharacter:Alkinoös, Odysseus, Alkinoös’s men, Poseidon, Zeus, AtheneConflict = What is Wanted: Odysseus really wants to get home, he tells the Phaiakians his entire story. Resolution: His story triggers the Phaiakians to give gifts of luxury and send Odysseus on his way to Ithaka.Character Development/Character Detail: Poseidon wants more revenge on Odysseus, so he turns the Phaiakians ship into stone when they see their shores. Help from the gods: Athena confronts Odysseus once he wakes up on the shore, he makes an elaborate lie to Athena who is disguised as a shepherd. She later reveals herself, and helps Odysseus get back to his home.
Disguises: Athena as the shepherd on the shore Culture: Alkinoös promises that each Phaiakian man will give him a gift to build up wealth for his return to Ithaka. They feast all day while Alkinoös’s men prepare the ships. The men also drop him off an the shore of Ithaka and leave all of his gifts with him. Allusions to other stories in mythology: none
