Rheia was one of the original Titans. Daughter of Gaia and Ouranos, her brother Cronos over threw Ourtanos and became "God of Heaven" and forced Rheia to marry him. Rheia and Cronos game birth to the six original olympians. Zeus, Hestia, Poseidon, Hades, Hera and Demeter. Cronos was worried that his children were going to overthrow him like he had his father so from the time they were born he swallowed each of his children. Rheia was so upset with Cronos that when her 6th child Zeus was born, she hid him away in a cave on Mount. Ida in Crete. Instead of giving Cronos the child she wrapped up a stone and gave it to him.
Zeus was raised in secret and when he was old enough to take cronos he kicked him in the stomach so hard that he threw up his five children. Since they were gods, they all had grown up fully inside of him. They were all able to over throw him together.
Rheia got rewarded for her kindness and was held in his regard by all the olympains.
Rheia also came into play with the myth of Persephone and Hades. Demeter was so upset over the loss of her daughter Persephone that she caused the earth to go through horrible weather and months like winter, when no crops would grow. Many gods tried convincing Demeter to come back to how she was, and join them all once again at Olympus. She refused all attempts at returning in till Rheia talked to her. Rheia convinced Demeter, Hades and Persephone to have Persephone live 1/3 of the year in the underworld, and 2/3 of the year up in Olympus with Demeter.
Connection to Lighting Theif:
Rheia had no direct connection in the story. She was not mentioned in the book at all. She has an indirect reference by being the mother of all the olympians.
