One of the twelve olympians, Poseidon, to the Romans known as Neptune, is the God of the Sea (river, flood and drought, earthquakes, and horses).His father is Kronos/Cronos, the Titan Lord, who ate him as a child but he was saved by his brother Zeus and his mother Rhiea, and together he and his siblings battled his dad and sent him down to the depths of Tartaros. After the battle, Zeus was made god of the Sky, Hades god of the Underworld, and Poseidon god of the Sea, making them the "Big Three." After the war was over, three Cyclopses gave poseidon a remarkable gift, his trident, which is now known as his symbol of power. During his rein he was known for offering calm seas, but when angered used his trident to great flood, earthquakes, and many other natural disasters.
Poseidon is one of the more famous gods, and has many interesting tales. He wanted to be the king of athens, but so did Athena, and they were told that whoever gave to best gift to man kind could have it. Poseidon struck his trident upon a rock and a horse came out, but Athena planted an Olive tree, which won the contest. Their rivalry didn't stop there. Poseidon had an affair with Medusa in one of Athena's temples, angering her, so she turned the once beautiful Medusa into a Gorgon. Poseidon married the goddess Amphitrite, and his most famous demigod son was Theseus.

Relation to the Lightning Thief
Without Poseidon, Percy Jackson, the lead protagonist in The Lightning Thief, would not be who he is. Poseidon is Percy's dad, which is why Percy has all of the powers of the sea. In The Lightning Thief, it explains that Poseidon was not allowed to have anymore children after World War 2, along with Zeus and Hades, but all three of them ended up breaking it. Poseidon only appears a little in the Lightning Thief, and feels bad that he hasn't been in Percy's life more. In more than one.of the books, it is implied that Percy is his favorite son.
