Orpheus A lover, a Poet, and a Gifted musician An amazing Poet and musician, founder of the arts and son of the music god Apollo. He played the leer, a small harp, more beautiful than anyone in the world, having the claimed ability to charm birds, change stream lines and even make rocks and wild beasts dance. Orpheus is one of the very few who have come back from the underworld alive. He fell madly in love with a young women named Eurydice, who was bitten by a snake and died. He was so miserable he stopped playing his leer, he was determined to win her back. Going through the underworld, and pleasing the ears of Hades, He had won his wife back. Under one condition, he not turn around and look at her. And since she was a ghost he could not hear her footsteps. At the mouth of the cave, he could not hold his temptation to look any longer, turning around and making the biggest mistake of his life. She was sucked back into the underworld and this time forever. Orpheus at the end of his life disdained the worship of all gods save the sun, whom he called Apollo. One early morning he went to the oracle of Delphi at Mount Pangaion to salute his god at dawn, but was torn to pieces by Thracian Maenads for not honoring his previous patron (Dionysus) and buried in Pieria. .He writes that the river Helicon sank underground when the women that killed Orpheus tried to wash off their blood-stained hands in its waters. Orpheus's story does not end in just sorrow, once dead he was once again reunited with his love Eurydice and never again were they separated. Pictures
