Nereids

Nereids are sea nymphs. There are fifty of them all daughters of Nereus and Doris. They stay in Poseidon's domain and help sailors with troubles they encounter in the sea. They are usually associated with the Aegean Sea, where they stayed with their father in a cave. Thetis and Amphitrite are the most know nereids.

Thetis is the mother of the known Achilles. He was born to a mortal father, Peleus, and Thetis wanted her son to be immortal. Therefore, she dipped her son in the river Styx, which is a way to gain immortality. She held him by the heel, which was not saturated by the magic water. He was not immortal and ended up later dying in the Trojan war where he was a hero.Amphitrite was the wife of Poseidon. At first she was asked to marry Poseidon, because of her beauty, however she declined and fled to the Ocean. A dolphin found her, brought her back to Poseidon and they married. They had a son Triton, a fish man, and a daughter Rhodes, which the island will later be named after.

Relation to the Lightning Thief

In the Lightning Thief the nereids help Percy through his journey to the underworld. They lived in the sea and gave messages to Percy from his father. Also, Grover always flirted with the nereids that live in the Atlantic ocean because it it right next to Camp- Half Blood.
