Centaurs are part horse and part human. They are said to have lived in Magnesia and Mount Pelion in Thessaly, the Folio oak forest in Elis, and the Malean peninsula in southern Laconia. They are best known for their fights with Lapiths. The reason for this was that they had tried to carry off Hippodamia and the rest of the Lapith women, on the day of her marriage to Pirithous, king of Lapithae. The Centaurs were droven off or destroyed by the help of Theseus. Female centaurs, called Kentaurides, were not a part of the earliest greek literature or art, but they do occasionaly appear in later antiquity. Though centaurs are thought of as barbaric and untamed, some are teachers such as Chiron. Chiron was the exact opposite of other centuars. He was intelligent, civilized, and kind. He was a son of Kronos while the other centaurs were sons of Ixion and Nephele, who was a cloud.
Relation to Lightning Theif. The only centaur in the Lightning theif is Chiron. Chiron is a very huge specimen, though he is gentle while his fellow centaurs are not. The only other mention of centaurs was when they were on the train and the little centaur waved to them.Sources: Rouse, WHD. Gods, Heroes, and Men of Ancient Greece.
