She tells him that her husband, Odysseus, has been away for 10 years, and that she's preparing to finally marry any suitor who shoots an arrow through 12 axe heads. Odysseus, who takes the disguise of 'Aithon', is a fellow fighter to Odysseus during the Trojan War. Penelope believes this story after the beggar describes Odysseus in great detail, bringing her to tears.

Normalize in the sense that unlike most people, she's had the willpower and love to not only remember Odysseus and pray for his return, but knowingly avoid many great suitors, just for the possibility of his return. She's portrayed as more human in this chapter; finally showing venerability and wear.
